Application Background

In 2020, we provided water purification services and related filtration equipment for the Sihanoukville 2×350 MW coal-fired power plant project in Cambodia.

Located in Preah Sihanouk Province, the project comprises two 350 MW supercritical generating units with a total installed capacity of 700 MW. Public project information identifies it as the Sihanoukville CIIDG–Huadian power plant, with the two units entering operation in 2022.

As a major power infrastructure project, the plant was developed to strengthen Cambodia’s electricity supply capacity and support the stability of the national power system.

Our water purification technologies and equipment were applied to support the plant’s water-treatment processes and maintain reliable operation of critical power-generation systems.

The Problem

Reliable water quality is essential for the continuous operation of large-scale thermal power plants.

During power plant operation, suspended solids, corrosion products and other particulate contaminants may enter process-water systems and affect downstream equipment and treatment processes.

Potential impacts include:

  • Deterioration of process-water quality
  • Increased contamination of downstream equipment
  • Reduced reliability of water-treatment systems
  • Increased maintenance requirements
  • Potential impact on the stable operation of critical plant infrastructure

For a 700 MW power plant, maintaining stable water quality is therefore an important part of ensuring continuous and reliable power generation.

The Solution

We provided customized water purification services and filtration equipment for the Sihanoukville power plant project.

The solution was developed according to the plant’s water-treatment requirements and operating conditions, providing filtration and purification support for relevant process-water systems.

Key solution features:

  • Customized water purification solution
  • Filtration of particulate contaminants
  • Improved process-water quality
  • Protection of downstream equipment
  • Support for stable water-treatment system operation
  • Long-term reliability for large-scale power generation

By controlling impurities within the relevant water-treatment processes, our solution helped support the reliable operation of the plant’s water systems and associated power-generation infrastructure.

Project Impact

The Sihanoukville power plant represents an important addition to Cambodia’s thermal power generation capacity. The two 350 MW supercritical units provide a combined 700 MW of installed capacity, strengthening the country’s domestic electricity-generation infrastructure.

Our water filtration technology and equipment provided supporting services for the plant’s water-treatment processes, contributing to:

  • Stable power plant operation
  • Improved water-quality management
  • Protection of critical water-system equipment
  • Reliable operation of supporting infrastructure
  • Improved continuity of electricity supply

The project also formed part of Cambodia’s broader expansion of domestic generation capacity. Electricity-sector data from Cambodia’s Electricity Authority lists Huadian Sihanoukville Power Generation Co., Ltd. with a 700 MW PPA, including the 350 MW Phase 2 unit.
